ADER CLEMENT: (1841-1925) French inventor and engineer who is primarily remembered for his pioneering work in aviation, although was also responsible for improving the telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell and establishing the telephone network in Paris in 1880. Ader was also one of the pioneers in the sport of cycling in France. Book signed and inscribed, being a softcover edition of L´Aviation militaire, third edition published by Berger-Levrault, Paris, 1911. Signed and inscribed by Ader in black fountain pen ink opposite the title page, ´A Monsieur le Commandent Duperrier, Hommage et sympathie, C Ader´. Some foxing and age wear and the printed paper covers becoming slightly detached from the spine, G L´Aviation militaire was a hugely popular work and went through ten editions in the five years between its publication in 1909 and the beginning of World War I. The book is especially famous for its precise description of the concept of the modern aircraft carrier with a flat flight deck, an island superstructure, deck elevators and a hangar bay.
