BERTHIER LOUIS ALEXANDRE: (1753-1815) Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. A fine L.S., ` Ml. Berthier´, one page, 4to, Paris, 21 st September 1804, in French. The letter bears an attractive printed French Revolution vignette to the heading. Berthier reports on Napoleon´s order, stating in part ` L´Empereur ayant fait manoeuvrer le 58º Régiment à Cologne, a été content de la tenue des officiers et des soldats, mais il a vu avec peine que le Major n´avait aucune connaissance des manoeuvres: en consequence Sa Majesté a ordonné qu´il sera suspendu…´ (Translation: ` The Emperor, having conducted the manoeuvres of the 58th Regiment in Cologne, was pleased with the behaviour of the officers and soldiers, but he noticed that sadly the Major had no knowledge of the manoeuvres: consequently His Majesty ordered that he will be suspended...´) Paper with watermark.
