In 1971 Citroën launched an advertising campaign with the following slogan: ‘First outing, first victory, Citroën SM 1st on the Rally of Morocco’; thus began the sporting career of the SM, which went on to win numerous competitions and took part in the highly prestigious Monte Carlo Rally in 1972
The SM presented here is a carburetted version from early 1971, obviously equipped with the very fine Maserati V6, and which was cleverly prepared to take part in historic rallies across Europe a few years ago SM2A carried out all these modifications at the request of Damien Ancelin, who wanted to set up his own racing team: Rallye Classic Team; the car is painted in the same sky-blue livery as the SM that won the 1971 Rallye du Maroc
In order to improve reliability and performance, the powertrain was completely overhauled and made more reliable, and to make the car lighter, the body was completely gutted and welded, a 6-point roll bar was made to measure, and two bucket seats and 4-point harnesses were fitted ; the car also has all the instrumentation required by the co-driver with the Tripmasters Since its preparation, the car has taken part in a number of rallies, including the Monte Carlo Historique on 3 occasions, as well as the Rallye du Portugal and the Serre Chevalier winter round; the SM has proved itself to be an incredible performer, and is now ready to return to historic competition
