A HANGING SCROLL WITH A RUBBING WITH HANSHAN AND SHIDEChina
123 x 60 cm (the rubbing)
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The print is the rubbing of a stone carving - preserved in the Hanshan temple of Suzhou - made by Tang Renzhai (active late 19th century), who reproduces in detail a well-known painting by Luo Ping (1733-1799), currently preserved at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, which depicts Hanshan and Shide, inseparable Zen monks who lived during the Tang dynasty.A similar example is preserved in the Princeton University Art Museum (inv. y1958-216).
