CHAIX, Charles (1885 -1973). Geneva composer. Autograph signed score of the instrumental part of his Poème funèbre, 18 p. in-folio. Envoi a. s. to "Henri Darel en souvenir du Noël 1923".
Poème funèbre for orchestra, choir and soli (in paradisium) by Charles Chaix, Op. 5.
Mobilized in 1914, he spent the entire campaign on the French front and in the Orient. It was in these circumstances that he wrote the entire instrumental part of Poème funèbre, a work he completed on his return to Geneva. This poem appears in the Dictionnaire des Musiciens Suisses, 1964, pages 74-75.
The score contains pencil additions and erasures. It comprises 3 parts, the first two numbered from 1 to 8, the third from 1 to 10:
I Dimitte ergo me
II Prepara te ad toleranda multa adversa
III Tuis autem fidelibus vita mutator non tollitur
In 1910, Charles Chaix took charge of the harmony class at the Geneva Conservatory. He subsequently taught transposition, superior harmony, counterpoint and composition until 1961, and also taught harmony, fugue and counterpoint at the Conservatoire National de Lyon (1924-1950).
