(Antwerp, 1590 - 1652) Storm at Sea Oil on panel, 38.5X51 cm Provenance: Cologne, Lempertz, March 15, 2017, lot 24 (as Andries Van Eertvelt) Private collection Born in Antwerp, we do not know how his training took place, but in 1609 the artist is recorded as a master in the Guild of St. Luke. In 1627 he undertook a trip to Italy with his pupil Matthieu van Plattenberg and is documented in Genoa from 1628 to 1630 with his compatriot Cornelis de Wael. He returned home and continued his career successfully, devoting himself mainly to painting seascapes. Indeed, there is no doubt that Van Eertvelt must be considered the most celebrated Flemish marine artist of his time, and his production diversified into battle scenes, storms, and views with ships at anchor, often evoking imaginary Mediterranean coastlines. The work is accompanied by critical entries by Ferdinando Arisi and Raffaella Colace.
