(Paris, 1728 - 1792) Saint Sebastian Oil on canvas, 64X47.5 cm. Provenance: Milan, Christie's, June 7, 2006, lot 105 (as 18th-century Roman school) Naples, Blindarte, May 22, 2019, lot 137 (as attributed to Corrado Giaquinto) Although a pupil of Boucher, Brenet was particularly influenced by Italian art of the Baroque age, looking to the works of Reni and Nicolas Poussin he learned during his Italian sojourn documented between 1756 and 1759. The work under consideration can be dated to these years, illustratively analogous to the Sleeping Endymion in the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. We can perceive in our case that the author saw and studied the creations of Corrado Giaquinto and Daniel Seiter.
