Head of a character
Oil on panel, cm 44.5X36
Provenance:
Vienna, Dorotheum, October 20, 2015, lot 255
The painting shows characters of style and writing that allow some comparisons with works by Daniele Crespi (Busto Arsizio, 1598 ; Milan, 1630) and particularly with the profile of St. Thomas visible in the canvas depicting the Incredulity of St. Thomas in a private collection (see Neilson, p. 61, no. 60, Table XIX). Another interesting comparison is possible with the Apostle's head depicted in the St. John the Baptist Pointing to Christ kept in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Busto Arsizio (see Neilson, pp. 26-28, fig. 17). These works, datable to the early years of the third decade, also suggest the chronology of the panel presented here.
