The painting was attributed to Francesco Solimena by Ferdinando Bologna in 1967, dating the work to the years 1730-1735, close to the Stories of St. Martin at the Charterhouse in Naples and the Annunciation in the Church of San Rocco in Venice. The scholar also recalls that the Serinese master painted the Crucifixion several times, starting with the one signed and dated 1697 that is preserved in the church of Santa Teresa in Solofra.
The work is accompanied by a critical card by Ferdinando Bologna.
