Formerly referred to Egbert Van Heemskerck I (1610 ; 1680) the painting has been traced to the hand of Egbert Van Heemskerck II by Raffaella Colace. The panel depicts a kitchen scene with the protagonists intent on praying before a meal. The figures have caricature faces reminiscent of the physiognomies of Adriaen van Ostade (Haarlem, 1610 ; 1684), a true storyteller of genre and tavern scenes. The painting also shows a vague Caravaggesque ancestry because of the way the painter brings the figures out of the shadows. The background, consequently, is barely defined and only a drawing hanging on the wall stands out, while all the painter's attention is focused on describing expressions, looks and gestures.
The work is accompanied by a critical file by Raffaella Colace.
