(Naples, 1683 - 1736) Stories of Joseph, c. 1700 Oil on canvas, 152.5X106.5 cm Provenance: Rome, private collection Trained with his father, a skilled perspective painter and decorator, Domenico Brandi looked to the Neapolitan landscape tradition, in particular the works of Gargiulo, before embarking on a journey to Rome, where he worked in the workshop of Rosa da Tivoli. In the Eternal City the painter acquired the illustrative and bucolic taste of his master, and the painting under consideration expresses this mixture very well, arriving at a picturesque vision of nature, which will be peculiar to his production. De Dominici defines him as an animalier painter, with outcomes that will also influence the art of Michele Pagano (Naples, 1697 ; 1732) and Nicola Viso (1724 ; 1742).
