(Venice, 1583? - Rome, 1618) Christ laid in the tomb Oil on canvas, 142X112 cm Provenance: Rome, private collection The painting has been traced back to Antonio Carracci's catalog by Francesco Barocelli recognizing between the lines Annibale's lexicon between 1605 and 1609 for similarities with the Pietà in the Louvre. The scholar also notes that the figure of Christ finds comparisons with the Pietà of the Capuchins in Parma and the one formerly in Palazzo Farnese now in Capodimonte. That said, analysis of the work reveals a pictorial conduction and 'archaism' that suggests a different hand and one that is measured against that of Antonio Carracci, son of Agostino, nephew of Annibale and his collaborator in Rome. At this time Barocelli thus places the execution of the work, in which an acerbity of intent is perceived, but also a kind of pictorial autonomy in execution.
