(Venice, 1673 - 1757)
Portrait of a lady
Tempera on paper, 9X6.8 cm
The quality of the drafts and the chromatic freshness lead to support the collector's attribution of the work to Rosalba Carriera, a celebrated portrait painter of the Rococo age whose works were sought after throughout Europe. A refined interpreter of the ideals of 18th-century worldly society, the painter distinguished herself in pastel painting by employing a highly personal technique, achieving effects of silky luminosity with a peculiar atmospheric character. According to sources, however, her early production was miniature, producing small portraits with quick, free and juxtaposed strokes in the Venetian painting tradition.
