Nantes, 1842 - 1918
Female portrait
Signed A J Chantron in lower left corner
Oil on panel, 60X45 cm
The work presented here, imbued with romanticism and sensuality, depicts a young woman posing within a setting, her dreamy gaze turned toward the viewer. A French artist, Chantron began his career painting portraits and still lifes, later devoting himself primarily to the study of nudes, done in the style of Bouguereau, while simultaneously experimenting with the nascent photographic technology of the time. A pupil of François-Édouard Picot, Tony Robert-Fleury and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1877, earning an honorable mention in 1893. He also exhibited the painting Fleurs de printemps at the Salon in 1895, received a third-class medal at the 1899 Salon and a second-class medal in 1902 for the painting Feuilles Mortes.
