The Dutch painter Hermanus Meurs, known as Harmen, studied at the State School of Arts and Crafts and the Imperial Academy in Amsterdam from 1909 to 1911. From 1918, he was a member of the artists' association "De Onafhankelijen" (The Independents), which he chaired until 1932. His oeuvre includes portraits, genre scenes and still lifes. His artistic development led him from Post-Impressionism via Surrealism to realistic painting in the style of New Objectivity.
