The Exil was the most important artists' bar in Germany at the time and attracted not only artists, but also musicians such as Chet Baker, David Bowie, film stars such as Romy Schneider and directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese. The artist Dieter Roth was a regular guest, producing around 1000 different business cards at the time, each of which he signed himself.
