Kohlhoff, Walter
o.T. (Landwehrkanal). 1979. oil on cardboard. 39.8 x 49.5 cm. Signed and dated. Framed in artist's frame. - Edges and corners somewhat bumped, with brown watery stains in the left and center of the image. No retouches visible under UV. Overall good.
Kohlhoff was a chronicler of West Berlin and created numerous, everyday and unagitated scenes of the city, mostly with the typical tenement houses and barracks in focus. Our scene shows the Landwehr Canal, not only a place on the river with a bridge crossing, but also the German-German border between West and East Berlin, which was the subject of numerous escape attempts and was therefore patrolled particularly closely by the GDR border guards. Kohlhoff shows the scene devoid of people and yet it is those who live in these houses who were not connected by this canal, but separated for 28 years.
