BENSERADE (Isaac de) - OVIDE Les Métamorphoses d'Ovide en rondeaux imprimez et enrichis de figures par ordre de sa majesté, Et dédiez à Monseigneur le Dauphin. Paris : Imprimerie Royale, 1676. - In-4, dark blue glazed calf, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, interior gilt roulette, gilt edges (19th-century binding). First edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses set in rondeaux by Benserade. Very luxurious, it was commissioned by Louis XIV and dedicated to the Dauphin. It is illustrated with a title-frontispiece by Charles Lebrun, engraved by Sébastien Leclerc, a title vignette with the royal coat of arms, two culs-de-lampe, and 226 intaglio vignettes by Leclerc, Le Pautre, and François Chauveau. A good copy in 19th-century binding. (spine faded, scratch on first board, two corners dulled. Scattered foxing)
