Set of two writing cases, India and Ottoman Empire, 19th century
Two brass writing cases with engraved decoration. The first, Indian, consists of two cut-edge calamus cases linked by a brass plate pierced with a frieze of notched lozenges marked with a central cross. The cases are flanked by a large cylindrical inkwell closed by a hinged lid and covered by a second bulbous domed lid linked to the base by a chain. The dome has a floral grip, engraved with striations and marked at the base with a floral frieze reproduced at the base of the inkwell flanked by a small case (camel holder?).
Max. height: 19 cm; length: 29.5 cm.
The second, a divit with an oblong case closed by a hinged lid and flanked by an inkwell with a square base and curved lines. Finely engraved cartouches with Arabic inscriptions and medallions and friezes with geometric or plant motifs.
