Late 16th century ROMAN SCHOOL, entourage of Polidoro da Caravaggio (Bergamo, 1492 - Messina, 1543).
Study of a historiated ewer with a dance of maenads.
Pen and brown ink on paper.
Height: 16 cm. Width: 5.8 cm. Sight.
Lower right, collection mark of Chevalier de Damery (L.2862), an active collector in the late 18th century, who died in 1803.
To be compared with the 1628 reissue, printed in reverse, of engraving no. 10 by Cherubino Alberti (1553-1615) after a drawing by Polidoro, published as a collection in 1582 (one copy in London, The British Museum, inv. 1873,1213.294).
