Marat, nicknamed "the incorruptible", was assassinated on July 13, 1793 by Charlotte Corday, who considered him the tyrant most responsible for the revolutionary massacres. Arrested at the scene of the crime, she was guillotined four days later. Revolutionaries and royalists each had their own martyr.
