Louis-Henri NICOT (Rennes, 1878 - Paris, 1944)
"Youth", circa 1907.
BUST of a young woman, bared breast, in white marble carved in direct cut. Rectangular base carved from the same block.
Titled and signed.
Height : 55 cm Width : 40 cm.
This bust, which appears in a photograph of the interior of Louis-Henri Nicot's studio, was presented at the Grand Palais during the 1907 Salon des Artistes Français under the title "Jeune femme".
Our warmest thanks go to Louis-Henri Nicot, the artist's grandson, for kindly providing us with this information. He tells us that this sculpture is now included in the catalog raisonné of his grandfather's work.
Instead of the powerful granite of his Armorican busts, Louis-Henri Nicot prefers here the fine grain of a white marble quarried far from Brittany. The soft skin of this marble sublimates the delicate allegory of a smiling, carefree youth, freezing this fleeting ideal for eternity.
