DAUM Nancy. Rare and important PIED DE LAMPE en balustre fuselé en verre puracé moucheté. It features a matt acid-etched "deep bite" pattern of chevrons bridged with lozenges on a granite background. The ringed top is adorned with lozenges and topped with a hammered iron hoop. It stands on a curved circular foot with en suite decoration. Signed on the wheel. Art Deco, 1930s. Height: 45.8 cm. Diameter: 23 cm (superficial scratches). Provenance: private collection, Quintin area. Paul Daum (1888-1944) boldly embraced the Art Deco movement. His creations of the late 1920s and 1930s feature translucent monochrome glass and abstract geometric designs. Hand-painted and wheel-engraved "showcase jewels" gave way to large-scale pieces with pure lines. The thick glass is sometimes immersed in five or six successive acid baths to release the decoration by "deep etching". The motif becomes the servant of the light, which must catch and play with matte, shiny, granite and frosted surfaces. There is no longer a flaw that can be made up with a brush: the quality is perfect.
