Fromm 3686 (second edition ibid. in the same year). - First edition of this translation of the small writings of the Catholic theologian Jacques Benigne Bossuet (1627-1704), Bishop of Meaux. Bossuet is considered a passionate opponent of the reform Catholic movement of Jansenism and the quietist mysticism of Jeanne Marie Guyon (cf. Bautz I, 713). Copy owned by the Bossuet translator Johann Michael Illmensee (1754-1846; cf. ADB XIV, 27), with his personal ownership inscription on the front endpapers and on the title of volume I verso. - Slightly stained in places, some glue staining to endpapers. - Bookplate.
