Karg v. Bebenburg,J.F.
Friedreiche Gedancken Uber die Religions-Vereinigung in Teutschland, aus dem H. Wort Gottes, allgemeinen Conciliis, SS. Canonibus, Holy Vättern, and ancient church histories. 1679. [12] pp., 353 p., [3] pp. d. Prgt. VD17 12:110853M, ADB XV, 121 - Rare pamphlet on ecumenism by the Catholic theologian and later Electorate of Cologne Chancellor and Prime Minister Johann Friedrich Karg zu Bebenburg (1648-1719). The work sparked a controversy in which the Würzburg theologian Georg Caspar Holtzapffel and the Schweinfurt Protestant pastor and hymn writer Caspar Heunisch were among those involved. - "K. was a capable diplomat, a knowledgeable and skillful publicist, a tenacious fighter for princely rights and claims, but he lacked true statesmanship. His character and morals were not without reproach, and he did not play a clear role in religious matters either: He was also considered a follower of Jansenism by one Fénelon, who met him during his exile and once described him as a cunning man, but sought to maintain good relations with the Curia." (NDB XI, 153f). - Paper darkened and somewhat stained in places. Text very well preserved, binding tight. With stamp and spine signature of a dissolved monastery library.
