Historicus duobus libris auctus. Mainz, J. Schöffer 1518(-19). Fol. With woodcut title border. 2 (instead of 80) pp., 730 p., 1 (instead of 15) pp. mod. Hldr. VD16 L 2090. Schweiger II, 526 f. Benzing, Hutten 237 - First edition with books 33,17 ff. and 40, 37ff. "These books were discovered in a monastery in Mainz, which was a first-rate event for the humanists. The printing of this Livius in its new form was entrusted to the Schoeffer Offizin and prepared with the greatest care as a magnificent print. The colophon gives November 1518 as the year of printing. However, the printing was delayed until March 1519, as the preface by N. Carbachius... dates from the Ides of March 1519, the preface by Erasmus (with effusive praise of the printers Fust and Schoeffer) from VII Cal. Martii 1519... preceded by a dedication by Hutten to the Elector of Mainz, Albrecht von Brandenburg" (Neufforge). The splendid initials were attributed by Butsch to Holbein's woodcut master Hans Lützelburger. - Some browning, somewhat stained and waterstained in places. Title stamped.
