Blake 339. - Important anatomical work published several times. - "A native of Perugia in central Italy, Pascoli initially practiced medicine in his native city and then lectured in philosophy and anatomy at the university. He had such success that he came to the attention of Pope Clement XI, who appointed him professor of anatomy in Rome. The present work is his textbook on anatomy which became very popular" (cf. Heirs of Hippocrates 758 to the 1700 edition)). - As usual, it is bound in at the end: Giorgio Baglivi: De fibra motrice et morbosa; nec non de experimentis, ac morbis salivae, bilis, & sanguinis... De circulatione sanguinis in testudine, ejusdemque cordis anatome. Epistola ad A. Pascoli. 46 pages. - ""In the letter Baglivi describes what we now call striated and smooth muscles and gives an account of their gross and microscopic structure. He believed that striated muscles were used for making short, rapid movements while smooth muscles were used for longer, sustained motions. Baglivi also observed that isolated portions of heart muscle contract and relax without external stimulation and that portions of skeletal muscle contract when stimulated by an external source" (Heirs of Hippocrates 737). - Occasionally somewhat stained, a few small repairs, 3 pp. somewhat trimmed in upper margin, partially uncut.
