Conte Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato
Historia Della Sacra Real Maestà di Christina Alessandra Regina di Svezia, &c. Rome, Stamperia della Reu. Camera Apostolica, 1656. 4°. Engraved title portrait, 5 unnum. Leaf with an engraved armorial vignette, 315 pp., 9 unnum. Indices. Restored parchment binding of the period (spine and endpapers renewed; stained and with rows of numbers on the covers). First edition of the history of Queen Christine (1626-1689), written and published before Gualdo Priorato (1606-1678) entered the service of the queen as her chamberlain. The work is dedicated to Prince Camillo Panfilio. Christine spent 1656-58 in France, where she tried to improve her desolate material situation with Louis XIV, who wanted to propose her as Queen of Naples. Gualdo Priorato came from an old family of counts; he initially embarked on a military career, during which he changed his rulers several times; at the end of the Thirty Years' War, Gualdo Priorato returned to Italy and focused on diplomacy and history. In 1652 he was called to Vincennes to write a biography of Cardinal Mazarin. Copy with numerous traces of rubbing. Small ink stains in the lower margin of some leaves.
