(1471 Nuremberg 1528). The six warriors (five lansquenets and one Oriental). Engraving on laid paper without recognizable watermark, c. 1495/96. 13.2 x 14.7 cm, sheet 13.7 x 15 cm. With the monogram below in the plate. Bartsch 88; Meder 81, a (of e); Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 4 - One of the earliest examples of the Landsknecht genre. "Dürer's sheet can be seen in the context of early imperial patriotism, which was linked to the young King Maximilian and propagated by humanists such as Sebastian Brant and Conrad Celtis in view of the Turkish threat" (Schoch). Without scratches. - Excellent, clear impression. - Repair with retouch at upper left corner, old ownership inscription (monogr. F.D. 1840) in brown ink on verso, partially somewhat worn through. Mounting remnants verso. - Written note on the mount "Epreuve de la Coll. Desbois". D
