The marchand de coco appeared on the streets of Paris at the end of the 18th century. This refreshing drink was made by macerating licorice sticks in lemon water. He wore a painted tin fountain on his back, a few cups on his belt, and announced himself to the sound of a bell, shouting: "Coco, coco, coco frais! Who wants coco?" or "À la fraîche! à la fraîche! Coco fountains are now on display at the Carnavalet and Montmartre museums.
