SENUFO DEBLE Ivory Coast Wood H: 128cm ***PLEASE NOTE THIS LOT IS NOT ON VIEW AT ST. STEPHEN'S GREEN. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR FURTHER INFORMATION*** NOTE The Senufo, a farming tribe scattered across northern Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Mali, have developed an artistic vocabulary deeply connected to the earth and fertility over the centuries. The Senufo world is governed by the influential secret society of the Poro, which operates on a caste system based on age and initiation. Initiation occurs in three stages, each lasting seven years. Combining rites of passage with esoteric learning, the Poro serves as both an order and an authoritarian system, blending magical theatre with the mystery of its initiations. Ceremonies are held in the sacred wood, a circular clearing in the forest where cult objects are kept. The Debles are used as rhythm pounders during funeral ceremonial dancing. The pounding of the earth is believed to drive away evil spirits. Carved in pairs, they are primarily used in funerals to honour former important members of the Poro sect. During these ceremonies, the deceased are introduced to ancestral spirits, and both the spirits and the primordial couple created by God are conjured.
