Pair of Kakemono Japanese role models Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Japan, 18th century. Paper, silk, bone. Each sign. Image size 69 x 23 cm and 71 x 24 cm. Each with a lady in a kimono. Image 1: Dimensions: Image 69 cm x 23 cm, scroll 126 cm x 32 cm. Published by: Izumi-ya Ichibei, 1851 Print series: Stories of wise and virtuous women (ca. 1841-1842) Image 2: Dimensions: Image 71 cm x 24 cm, scroll 119 cm x 33 cm. Depicted is an actress who appeared in a scene from the play "Tayoriari gohiiki no tsuna" at the Kawarazaki Theater in 1832. The role is signed by " Hana Zakari, Kochoro Kuniyoshi". Woodcut with embossed decorations. Condition: Traces of age and use. Browned. Printed papers each slightly offset, one jikusaki in image 1 missing. Utagawa Kuniyoshi(1797-1861), print artist. Pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni. One of the three main artists of the 'Ukiyo-e' in the late Edo period, together with Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and Hiroshige. Toyokuni III (1786-1865) was the most famous actor-print designer of the nineteenth century and undoubtedly the most prolific. At the age of fourteen or fifteen he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) in 1800-1801 and shortly afterwards adopted the pseudonym Kunisada.
