Johannes Janssonius
c. 1588 Arnhem - 1664 Amsterdam - "Territorium Norimbergense" (Nuremberg) - Colored copperplate engraving/paper. 36.5 x 47 cm (plate size). Matted. Framed under glass. Browned. Johannes Janssonius came from a family of printers and publishers, where he learned the printing trade at an early age. He married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius in 1612 and thus became a member of one of the most important publishing families in the Netherlands. He continued to expand his publishing house in the field of geography and cartography and - always in competition with the Blaeu publishing family - brought new world, sea and city atlases onto the market. His main works are the Atlas Majoris Appendix (1639), the six-volume Atlas Novus (1638ff.) and the monumental Atlas Major in eleven volumes (1647).
