French fleet at anchor, in heavy weather, off an Italian coast
Canvas, monogrammed lower left (restorations)
106 x 162 cm
Born in La Rochelle on December 8, 1784, Pierre Clément Caussé began his maritime life at the age of 14, and ended it as a ship's captain in 1840, at the end of a 42-year maritime career. In 1820, he was appointed captain aboard the schooner l'Amarante for a campaign to Italy and the Levant. In 1830, he took part in the Battle of Algiers on the frigate l'Algésiras, and this painting is certainly inspired by a storm scene he probably experienced at that time in the Mediterranean.
