Georges MATHIEU (1921-2012) "Covered Clarity" Alkyd on canvas signed lower right and titled on reverse. 73 x 92 cm Provenance: - Former collection of Mr. René Bernard, art journalist with L'Express and friend of Georges Mathieu, from whom he purchased it around 1976 (see correspondence between them). - Private collection, Oise, by descent. An application for a certificate from the Comité Georges Mathieu is currently underway. Condition report dated 18/06/2024 at 11:30 am: This work is executed in alkyd on canvas. As is often the case with Mathieu's work, there are significant impastos of material, but they adhere perfectly to the canvas. The canvases are tightly stretched over the stretchers. The stretchers bear the artist's handwritten titles on the back. The canvas is signed in black at the bottom. Corrected on June 21, 2024 at 12:30 pm: Deletion of "(1970)" written in error after the title. As indicated under the card, M. BERNARD came into possession around 1976. The frame is rudimentary, made of simple wooden strips nailed to the sides of the stretchers. * Reminder: In accordance with the conditions of sale, the buyer is responsible for the droit de suite on this lot (4% of the hammer price only from €750 up to €50,000, decreasing thereafter).
