This group is a technical tour de force representing the myth of Faust, the alchemist who made a pact with Mephistopheles.
Mephistopheles: the latter would fulfill all the scholar's desires for 24 years in exchange for his soul. Faust falls madly in love with Marguerite. In the end of the second version of Goethe's play, Marguerite saves Faust from hell thanks to her prayers. "The eternal feminine lifts us up," concludes Goethe.
