Spine uniformly faded to tan, small paper loss to upper board, corners dulled, foxing. FIRST FRENCH EDITION of Karl MARX's MAJOR text. It appeared in issues from August 1872 to May 1875. This is the FIRST EDITION, with Maurice Lachâtre's reply printed on the verso of the facsimile of Marx's letter to him; this reply will be omitted from subsequent editions.An illustrated frontispiece, a large vignette on the title leaf, a portrait of Marx, vignettes and headers. The translation by Joseph ROY (1830-1916) was entirely revised by Karl Marx, who went so far as to state in the Notice to the Reader dated April 28, 1875 that the French edition "has a scientific value independent of the original and should be consulted even by readers familiar with the German language".
