ANDRÉ (Françoise). A VISUAL BIOGRAPHY OF GERTRUDE STEIN. In-plano (77 X 82.5 cm approx.) cream chagrin on wood, studded cream chagrin lining, title in gilt paper letters pasted to 1st board, smooth mute spine (Period binding); 10 plates (69 X 76 cm), each protected in plastic sleeve. ORIGINAL MAQUETTE consisting of 10 PLATES illustrated on the front with ORIGINAL DRAWINGS captioned in English (graphite, colored gouache, gold and silver leaf) by Françoise ANDRÉ, real name Françoise STEGEMAN-ANDRÉ (Sables d'Olonne, 1926-2009, Malvern, Chester County, U.S.A.). This is a TRIBUTE to the American poet, writer, playwright and feminist Gertrude STEIN (1874-1946), for whom the French painter felt a great passion. Françoise ANDRÉ studied drawing and painting at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and at the École desArts Décoratifs in Paris under painter Marcel GROMAIRE. Having lived in Canada and the United States, and although influenced by American abstraction (Morris Graves and Mark Tobey in particular), she has always favored the representation of the human figure in her painting, often described as SURREALIST. Some of her works are held in the permanent collections of museums and institutions in Canada, the United States and Belgium. Provenance: Maria PERGAY Estate (1930-2023)
