Nu couché 1920 Pastel and charcoal on paper signed and dated lower right 28.5 x 37 cm Condition report: Framed, glass missing Born in Ekaterinoslav, now Dnipro, Ukraine, he studied painting at the Odessa School of Fine Arts. He moved to Paris in 1909, where he made a name for himself riding through the streets of Montparnasse wearing a cowboy hat. A figurative painter associated with the École de Paris, his work is punctuated by nudes, scenes of Parisian life and Russian folklore. He was arrested on July 17, 1942 by the French police during the Vél d'Hiv riot. Interned at the Drancy camp, he was deported and died at Auschwitz.
