Plate from a series of Months in enamel painted in grisaille with gold and rose highlights for the faces representing the Month of August. Reverse: allegorical figure of the zodiacal sign of Virgo in the form of a winged woman, symbol of chastity, stretched out from behind, holding four ears of wheat in one hand in reference to Demeter and surrounded by a cartouche of cut-out and rolled-up leathers with cherub head and female mascaron; back of wing with laurel wreath.
Limoges, attributed to Pierre Courteys, circa 1565-1575
Diameter: 19.4 cm
(wear to the gold, restorations notably around the bottom and to the marli)
