Two rare fragments depicting lustrous faces
Siliceous ceramic with metallic lustre decoration
Iran, probably Kashan, second half of 13th century
10 x 5.3 cm and 7.5 x 5.2 cm
These two rare lustre fragments depict the heads of figures wearing furs reminiscent of Mongolian hats. The presence of glaze on the outer edges of the faces indicates that these are not fragments of large rectangular tiles. The form and purpose of the object from which these fragments came is difficult to determine. A number of lustre-shaped pieces from this period are known, most often depicting seated figures whose heads form the neck, which is not the case here.
