Two cuerda seca tiles
Ceramics with cuerda seca decoration
Levant, circa 1540-1550
14.5 x 19.5 and 16.5 x 19.5 cm
The first is decorated with a floral scroll on a cobalt ground, and part of a cartouche with flowers on a black ground. The second is decorated with florets in polygons, and palmettes on a cobalt ground. A similar example is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, under reference 682-1897. Similar tiles were produced for the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, whose restoration was ordered by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1550.
