Seljuk rosewater ewer and sprinkler Brass with repoussé and engraved decoration, bronze or cast brass Iran, Khorassan, 12th - 13th century, Seljuk period Height 35.5 cm (ewer) and 27 cm (sprinkler) Ewer provenance: Laurent Horny Collection. Boisgirard & Ass., 10/12/2018, lot 64. This ewer, typical of Khorassan production in the Seljuk period, features repoussé and engraved decoration. The gadrooned body is engraved with birds in mandorles, calligraphic cartouches and foliate friezes. On the horizontal shoulder, a circular frieze alternates floral medallions and calligraphic cartouches. It is crowned by a straight neck adorned with two lions in repoussé, and features an oblique pourer decorated with a lion in repoussé. It stands on a circular flared foot (accidents, missing handle and broken neck). The aspersoir rests on a high flared foot and features a spherical body topped by a curved neck with nail heads. The engraved decoration features foliate cartouches on the body and a calligraphic frieze on the neck. These small vases were finished with a grid to be used as sprinklers.
