CARACCIOLI (Louis-Antoine) - L'univers énigmatique. Francfort, Chez J. F. Bassompierre, 1762; in-12, XXII-184 pp, bound in contemporary full marbled calf, 5-ribbed spine, edges painted red. Louis-Antoine Caraccioli, born in Le Mans in 1719 and died in Paris in 1803 (aged 83), was a French polygraphist and author of literary, historical, political and theological works. From a younger branch of the Neapolitan house of this name, he entered the Oratorians in 1739, which he left shortly afterwards, spent some time in Poland, where he educated Prince Rzewuski, then returned to Paris, where he devoted himself entirely to letters and lived from the product of his pen.
