The first 5 volumes of the Bibliothèque Bleue. The Bibliothèque bleue is a primitive form of peddling literature that appeared in France in the early 17th century. The creation and distribution of the Bibliothèque Bleue was a particularly lucrative business for printers. Towards the end of the 19th century, the number of printers of this literature was estimated at one hundred and fifty, in addition to the four main printing dynasties of Troyes, Rouen, Caen and Limoges, some of whom made their fortunes very quickly thanks to this activity. The creation of the Bibliothèque Bleue was the initiative of these major printing families. It was nicknamed the Bibliothèque Bleue (Blue Library) because the paper on which the books were printed was often blue.
