CORNEILLE - Théâtre de P. Corneille. S.l. (Genève), s.e., 1765; in-8, 390 + 339 + 403 + 390 + 343 + 353 + 367 + 327 + 365 + 397 + 439 + 333 pp. bound in contemporary full speckled calf, ornate smooth spines, edges painted red, red morocco title-piece. All 12 volumes. The illustrations are the same as for the previous edition: a frontispiece by Pierre engraved by Watelet and 34 out-of-text figures by Gravelot engraved by Baquoy, Flipart, Lemire, Lempereur, de Longueil, Prévost and Radigues. Corneille presented by Voltaire. This famous edition was produced at the instigation of Voltaire, who wanted to endow a niece of Corneille, whom he had grown fond of. He opened a successful subscription and wrote the commentary and dedication to the Académie. Voltaire shows himself to be, as usual, witty and original. Consultant : Mr. Philippe HENRY
