[MONTESQUIEU] - Considérations sur les causes de la grandeur des Romains et de leur décadence. Paris, Chez David, 1755; in-12, frontispiece by Eisen, II-368 pp, contemporary full marbled calf binding, 5-rib spine, edges painted red, red morocco title-piece. Fine edition with frontispiece. The text "Dialogue de Sylla et d'Eucrate" is added at the end of the volume. Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, was an 18th-century French political thinker and moralist. After studying philosophy, he became President of the Bordeaux Parliament. A keen scientist, he began by publishing scientific works on echoes, glands and gravity. He then turned to philosophy and literature. He traveled widely and became a mason. He publishes L'Esprit des Lois and begins collaborating on the Encyclopédie, but goes blind and dies in 1755.
