Qalamdan pencil box with Holy Family design, Iran qâjâr, 19th century
Oblong papier-mâché plumier with painted, gilded and lacquered decoration depicting, on the top, the Holy Family in a landscape, a kneeling young man and a peacock in the foreground, an angel among the trees in the background. On either side, a cartouche depicting a woman lying down in the presence of an elderly man and a child, framed by two portraits of women in oval medallions. The ends are decorated with an architectural landscape with a European perspective.
