This interesting scene is an illustration of the story of Krishna and Sudama in the Bhagavata Purana. It shows the beautiful proof of friendship shown by the god Krishna for his childhood friend Sudama, who until then had known only a miserable life of great deprivation. The same scene is depicted in a late 18th-century Pahari painting in the Victoria and Albert Museum (IS,548-1952).
