FLEMISH SCHOOL circa 1600, follower of Pierre Brueghel the Elder
Flemish Proverbs

Old restorations
Our painting is inspired by the famous work by Pieter Brueghel the Elder in Berlin (Staatliche Museen, 117 x163 cm), which illustrates a hundred Flemish proverbs, of which many replicas are known. Here we discover allegories of popular common sense, denouncing human failings such as avarice, represented by the man in black in the center, lying on his cassette. While some proverbs still appeal to our imagination - such as "don't throw money out of the window" - others, like the character yawning in front of the oven, symbolize a more mysterious wisdom.
